"South Shropshire's cultural heritage is a vital part of our area's identity and history. I am committed to supporting our local communities and preserving our heritage assets for future generations. Heritage assets in the region serve as major tourist attractions, contributing to the local economy. In Shropshire, tourism has raised over £200 million since 2021. By preserving cultural heritage, we can foster community pride and a sense of ownership among local residents. We can also drive economic growth and create new opportunities for local businesses and communities.
Supporting Heritage Assets:
Stuart Anderson MP has urged venues across South Shropshire's heritage sector to apply for funding from the Government's £270 million 'Arts Everywhere' Fund. This fund includes the Museum Estate and Development Fund (MEND) and the Museum Renewal Fund, which support museum renovation projects and tackle maintenance backlogs. £226,238 has been awarded to help the Shropshire Museum and Archive Service continue its outstanding work, helping the service to sustain engagement with local communities, and protect Shropshire’s rich cultural heritage despite ongoing uncertainties.
Since 1994, The National Lottery Heritage Fund has awarded £20,766,738 to 241 projects in South Shropshire constituency, such as the 2024/25 grant of £592,109 to the Parochial Church Council of Nash and Boraston for St John the Baptist Church, Nash, to enable the repair of the tower spire and roof of St John the Baptist Church, and to celebrate the history of the church, creating a timeline for the building’s history. Over the last 10 years, Historic England has administered £1,283,643 of funding in South Shropshire. Historic England is also actively engaged in discussion with the owners and managers of assets on the Heritage at Risk Register in South Shropshire as well as other assets within the constituency.
Recognising Wenlock Olympian Games:
Stuart Anderson MP has nominated the Wenlock Olympian Games, founded by Dr. William Penny Brookes in 1850, for inclusion in the UK-wide 'Inventory of Living Heritage'. This recognition would acknowledge the Games' significance in promoting physical and mental well-being, as well as its role in inspiring the modern Olympic movement.
Preserving Historic Churches:
Stuart Anderson MP has expressed concern about the number of historic churches on the 'Historic England Heritage' at Risk Register, including 16 in South Shropshire. He's called on the government to extend schemes that support the preservation of these cherished assets. The government has subsequently announced the Places of Worship Renewal Fund. This will have an annual budget of £23 million starting in 2026/27. Running until 2029/30, it will provide £92 million through National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Community Ownership:
Stuart Anderson MP believes in the importance of community ownership of local assets. This includes community pubs, which are often at the center of rural communities. He supports initiatives that ensure their long-term sustainability.
Village Halls:
Stuart Anderson MP recognises the vital role that village halls play in rural communities, providing a hub for social activity, community events, and local services. He supports initiatives that help village halls to thrive and remain at the heart of community life.
Ludlow Ensign:
Stuart Anderson MP is a strong supporter of the Ludlow Ensign, a historic flag that is an important symbol of the town's identity and heritage. He believes that the Ensign should be preserved and celebrated as part of South Shropshire's rich cultural heritage.
