"Despite their huge social, environmental and economic impact, small charities are often under-funded and struggle for vital visibility in a crowded media landscape. I am committed to supporting local communities in South Shropshire, and have been pleased to visit many community-based initiatives since my election in July 2024. To support these organisations, I have launched a Community Support Finder on my website. This details the latest support that is available for charitable organisations in both South Shropshire and beyond. I hope that this will be a useful resource for the many volunteers who give their time and energy to run these impactful organisations."
Plan for Neighbourhoods
The Government has published an updated list of powers (or ‘policy toolkit’), which outlines existing powers available to communities and local authorities in England (and, in some instances, Wales).
The UK government’s Common Ground Award will invest capital funding into VCSE sector organisations that are bringing people together from different backgrounds, supporting the cost of constructing or renovating facilities, or the purchasing of equipment to deliver services. Up to £1.7 million capital funding within the 2025/2026 financial year, distributed in payments of up to £10,000 per successful applicant. Applications open on 13 October and the deadline for applications is 21 November 2025.
Village Halls (and Facilities)
In recognition of the integral role that village halls play in rural communities, Stuart has been pushing Ministers to unlock funding that the last government had made available for upgrades and renovations at these venues. Applications have now opened for larger projects. You can find the details at www.stuartanderson.org.uk/news/stuart-anderson-mp-promotes-support-now-available-village-halls-south-shropshire. We understand that applications for smaller projects will open later in the year. In the meantime, please visit ACRE’s website at https://acre.org.uk/vibrant-village-halls/. Action with Communities in Rural England (ACRE) is a charitable organisation which supports rural communities through its network of 38 member organisations covering rural England, including Community Resource Shropshire. The work of the ACRE network includes supporting volunteers and encouraging volunteering. The MyCommunity site has been designed to help any organisation seeking to save an asset that is important to them and their local community. The development support provider may also be able to help to suggest alternative sources of funding that organisations could look to secure.
Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF)
The £2.6 billion Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) has seen more than £12 million invested across South Shropshire to support businesses and communities including:
- £150,000 for Crowdfund Shropshire - a civic crowd funding platform for community groups to access support from public donations, launched in October 2023. An opportunity to bring forward an impactful project in the neighbourhood and receive financial support from the Council and the local community - via crowdfunding - to help make it happen.
- Vibrant Shropshire: A Cultural Compact Grant Scheme of between £1,000 to £5,000 to deliver innovative cultural projects that will make a real difference in local communities. In 2024, Vibrant Shropshire awarded 29 projects across the county with UKSPF grants reaching a total of over £115,000.
Active Travel Innovation Fund
The Active Travel Innovation Fund is inviting applications from small to medium-sized businesses and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), with grants of up to £100,000 available for each successful project. The window for applications runs from 6 October to 14 November 2025.
VCSE Contract Readiness Programme
This fully funded programme aims to support VCSE suppliers in England to work with government clients who can really help increase their impact. It also aims to help public sector commissioners to work with innovative organisations that share their values. Delivered by the School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE), Social Enterprise UK (SEUK) and Voice4Change England, this programme is funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).
Multi-Sports Grassroots Facilities Programme
On 21st March, Ministers announced a £100 million to a flagship sports programme set up by the last government. It follows a request by Stuart who called on the government to continue it. In England, it will be delivered via the Football Foundation – a charity set up by Government, the FA, and Premier League. Applications are on ongoing.
In June 2025, the Government announced that at least £400 million will be invested in new and upgraded grassroots sport facilities that promote health, wellbeing and community cohesion. To celebrate the incredible success of England's Lionesses, the Government announced in July 2025 that it will be launching a new grants scheme to be delivered by the Football Foundation. This will focus on creating welcoming, safe and accessible facilities for women and girls at existing grassroots sports sites.
