South Shropshire Tribute Planted in Parliament’s Remembrance Garden by Stuart Anderson MP

Stuart Anderson MP has marked the start of the Poppy Appeal. Running since 1921, the annual charity event organised by the Royal British Legion (RBL) has a dual purpose – to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice and to raise money for those who have been left disadvantaged by their time in Service.

To mark the special occasion, Stuart has planted a Remembrance Tribute on behalf of his constituents in South Shropshire together with tributes laid by fellow Members of Parliament, as well as representatives from the Commonwealth, the UK Overseas Territories, and the Crown Dependencies.

They were invited to do so by Speaker of the House of Commons, the Rt. Hon. Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP. Stuart said that it was an honour to have taken up the invitation to plant a Remembrance Tribute on behalf of his constituents in South Shropshire at the installation, which has been designed in partnership with the Royal British Legion (RBL).

The tributes will see the main entrance of the Houses of Parliament filled with red poppies for the third year in a row, after the Garden of Remembrance was originally devised to mark one hundred years of remembrance as we know it in 2021. Red poppies have been worn as a show of support for the Armed Forces since the same year, 1921. It is hoped more tributes will be planted throughout the month, creating a national Garden of Remembrance with tributes from every constituency across the country.

This year, Remembrance Sunday will take place on 10th November. In the run up to this, thousands of people will be volunteering their time to sell poppies and collect donations for the RBL’s Poppy Appeal. Stuart is encouraging everyone to donate to the RBL and display a red poppy in support of those who have proudly served our country in the Armed Forces.

Stuart Anderson MP said:

“Having served in the Armed Forces myself, it was a huge honour to plant a tribute in respect of those who have proudly served our country in the Armed Forces on behalf of my constituents across South Shropshire at the Garden of Remembrance outside the Houses of Parliament. I am grateful to the Speaker of the House, Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP, and to the Royal British Legion, who have made this installation possible for the third consecutive year now. As a veteran, the season of Remembrance has deep personal meaning for me. So, it was excellent to pay tribute to fellow ex-service personnel in this way. I would encourage everyone to take part in this national act of remembrance by supporting the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.”
