Stuart Anderson MP Backs Conservative Party Plan to Cut Energy Bills

Stuart Anderson MP has backed the Conservative Party's Cheap Power Plan to cut electricity bills by a fifth for residents across South Shropshire.

In a speech in Parliament on Wednesday 12th November 2025, Stuart said that rural areas face extra challenges when it comes to heating their homes. This includes when looking to retrofit energy efficiency measures in some rural houses.

Almost two million households do not benefit from the Energy Price Cap at all. According to the 2021 Census, just 42% of households used main gas central heating in South Shropshire.

This is compared with a national average of 73%. Stuart has said that the government must deliver a fairer deal for those who live in off-grid communities, including the country's almost two thousand park home sites.

Although they may not all be low-income households, the cost of upgrades can be a real deterrent. Stuart urged Ministers to also support the insulation of England's nine million homes that were built before 1945. They can be made more energy efficient with a few quick steps.

Stuart said that fuel poverty - which affects more than nine thousand households in South Shropshire - is being driven Labour’s ideological pursuit of Net Zero. Stuart added that it is unacceptable that Britain’s domestic energy prices are now the second highest in the world.

Stuart has now backed the Conservative Party's plan to scrap expensive subsidies, which cost £25 billion pounds a year. That is almost half the UK's defence budget.

Under the Conservative Party Plan, the average restaurant would save £5,100 a year. It comes as the UK's industrial energy prices are now among the highest in Europe.

Stuart's Winter Ready Campaign aims to equip residents with the information they need as the new season arrives. This includes an Energy Saver's Guide, which helps residents save money on their energy bills.

The Guide includes useful information, tips, and guidance on energy tariffs and home insulation as well as other ways in which residents can make their homes more energy efficient.

Stuart Anderson MP said:

"Businesses and residents in South Shropshire deserve a much better deal when it comes to energy bills, which have increased by almost two hundred pounds under Labour. This is despite their promise to cut household energy bills by £300. Only the Conservatives have the backbone to deliver cheaper energy bills. That is why I back our Cheap Power Plan to cut electricity bills by a fifth for residents and hospitality venues thousands of pounds each year. Our plan will put more money back in the pockets of families, so they have more to spend on what matters. It will also support British industry to create more jobs and deliver a stronger economy."
