Stuart Anderson MP has called on residents across South Shropshire to take three steps as part of Flood Action Week. The campaign encourages everyone to assess their long-term flood risk and protect themselves and their properties.
According to the Environment Agency, 6.3 million homes and businesses across England are in areas at risk of flooding. This includes 112,000 properties in the West Midlands. At the same time, one in four homeowners have not checked whether their home is at risk of flood damage.
This year's campaign is running between 13th and 19th October 2025. It is a joint initiative between the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the Environment Agency, and water industry. It aims to ensure that people know about their flood risk, how to protect themselves, and what to do in a flood.
Flooding is one of the most destructive natural disasters in the UK, affecting thousands of homes and businesses each year. In the first six months of 2025, claims for weather-related damage to homes and possessions reached £424 million.
The Met Office has forecast an increased likelihood of a wetter than average Autumn. Stuart has said that taking early action can help to mitigate the impact of flooding. As part of this campaign, Stuart has urged residents across South Shropshire to:
- Sign up for the free flood warning service by phone, text or email.
- Make a personal flood plan including a list of things to prepare for.
- Consider flood resilience measures, where they are appropriate.
Stuart's call to action is part of his plan to support local communities in South Shropshire. As part of this, Stuart wants to do everything that he can to help householders and businesses plan ahead to mitigate the impacts of flooding.
Stuart has published a Flooding Support Finder on his website to help everyone find the latest support available. This includes information on recovery grants, upgrades available as part of the Build Back Better Scheme, and insurance policies.
Stuart Anderson MP said:
"Flooding has sadly devastated communities across South Shropshire in recent years. Flood Action Week is a vital opportunity for residents to become more informed about the risks of flooding and take action to prepare for one. I urge residents across South Shropshire to check sign up for the free flood warning service, make a personal flood plan including a list of things to prepare for, and consider flood resilience measures where they are appropriate. My Flooding Support Finder lists the key actions that residents should take and support available in the event of a flood."
