Stuart Anderson MP Promotes National Grid Apprenticeships in South Shropshire

Stuart Anderson MP is promoting clean energy apprenticeships as a way to unlock homegrown skills across South Shropshire. He has welcomed the latest round of applications for the National Grid Apprentice Programme, which provides young people and career changers with the opportunity to build a fascinating and rewarding career in clean energy.

National Grid is the first apprenticeship provider to be rated 'outstanding' for three consecutive inspections by Ofsted, the education sector regulator. The company has also been ranked in the top 25 Best Apprenticeship Employers to work for by 'Rate My Apprenticeship.'

The apprentice programme is designed to provide individuals with the skills needed to support the transition to a low carbon economy and combines both academic study and hands-on learning.

While apprentice roles are spread right across the country, many new joiners will hone their skills at a one-of-a-kind, world-class residential training centre in Eakring, Nottinghamshire, which offers an unrivalled development experience.

Eakring training centre is a central part of its training proposition, along with dedicated operational and technical training centres in Taunton in Somerset and Tipton in the West Midlands.

It is the latest addition to Stuart's Employment Support Finder. He launched it last year to make it easier to find the range of work and training opportunities available for residents across South Shropshire.

On the National Grid Apprentice Scheme, students can choose between an Advanced (A-Level equivalent) or Higher Apprenticeship (post-A-Level) programme. The latest round of applications comes at an exciting time for National Grid, as it is investing over £30 billion over the next five years.

The investment will deliver the most significant transformation of the UK's electricity grid in generations. It will support the UK's clean energy transition and drive economic growth across the country, including in South Shropshire.

Apprenticeships provide people of all backgrounds with the opportunity to earn and learn the skills needed to start, or progress in, an exciting career. Between 2010 and 2023, over 5.3 million apprenticeships have been created across England - including 7,190 in South Shropshire.

Stuart Anderson MP said:

"Over the last fifteen years, apprenticeships have created opportunities for thousands of people from across South Shropshire to kickstart careers in exciting fields. The National Grid Apprentice Scheme is the latest addition, offering an amazing opportunity to shape the future of energy, work on crucial projects, and earn while learning. Through a mix of studying and practical training at first class facilities, apprentices can develop new skills and a meaningful career. I encourage anyone seeking a job that offers continuous training and development, while contributing towards the creation of a cleaner energy future to explore these schemes."

Georgia Morgan, a National Grid Apprentice said:

“I’m in my final year of a National Grid Advanced Apprenticeship and am delighted with my career choice. An apprenticeship has many benefits, not least the ability to work and study within your chosen field, all while earning a salary and gaining a recognised qualification.  The course has been a mix of practical hands-on training and classroom-based activities, grounding my knowledge and building my confidence for work in the field.  I’m surrounded by incredibly experienced people that have supported me throughout and there are a variety of different opportunities available on completion of my course. The fact I’m working at the forefront of the energy transition is an added bonus and I’d full recommend an apprenticeship for anyone considering their career options.”

Applications for the apprenticeship scheme will be closing on 28 February 2025. For more information on the apprenticeship opportunities available at National Grid: https://jobs.nationalgrid.com/UK/content/Apprentices/.
