Stuart Anderson MP has visited Burford to meet with representatives from Burford Parish Council and discuss proposals for a housing development on land adjacent to Boraston Drive.
The visit followed concerns raised by the Parish Council and local residents over the suitability of the site, particularly given its history of flooding. Stuart met with the Parish Clerk and councillors from Burford Parish Council at the proposed development site to hear first-hand about the issues facing the community and to better understand the potential impact the development could have on the village.
During the visit, councillors highlighted concerns about the site's regular flooding, the possible consequences for existing and future residents, and the importance of ensuring that any new housing is delivered in appropriate locations.
Following the visit, Stuart said he supports the delivery of new homes across South Shropshire but believes developments must be built in the right places.
Stuart Anderson MP said:
"South Shropshire needs more homes, particularly affordable homes that allow local people and young families to remain in the communities they grew up in. However, we must ensure that new housing is built in suitable locations where it is both safe and sustainable.
"It was invaluable to meet with the Burford Parish Clerk and councillors to hear their concerns first-hand and to visit the proposed site. Having seen the land for myself, I share their concerns.
"It is clear that this field has a history of flooding. Building homes on land that regularly holds water simply does not make sense. We have a responsibility to ensure that new developments do not create unnecessary risks for future residents or worsen flooding for those already living nearby.
"Local knowledge is incredibly important when planning decisions are made. The people who live here understand how this land behaves during periods of heavy rainfall, and their experience should carry significant weight throughout the planning process.
"I have always supported delivering the right homes in the right places. Unfortunately, I do not believe this proposal meets that test, and I will continue working alongside the Parish Council and local residents to ensure their concerns are properly considered."
Burford Parish Council added:
“Burford Parish Council met with the local MP for South Shropshire, Stuart Anderson, on site to continue his involvement in objecting to the proposed Outline Planning Application of 100 houses in the field adjacent to Boraston Drive.
His main concern, along with Burford Parish Council and residents of Burford, is that the proposed site lies within a high risk flood plain and has a well documented history of flooding.”
Stuart thanked Burford Parish Council for taking the time to meet with him and discuss the proposal in detail. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring local voices are heard throughout the planning process and encouraged residents to engage with the consultation so that their views can be fully considered before any decision is reached.
As the planning application progresses, Stuart will continue engaging with residents, the Parish Council and the relevant authorities to ensure that development across South Shropshire is delivered responsibly, with appropriate infrastructure and in locations that are suitable for future generations.
