Championing Health and Wellbeing

Stuart Anderson MP championing health and wellbeing
Stuart Anderson MP supporting local NHS services

As someone who has been affected by poor mental health, I am working hard to secure better investment for local services that improve our health and wellbeing. I am also promoting ways in which we can all take better care of ourselves - by choosing healthy food options, staying active, and looking after our mental health. The health and wellbeing of my constituents is integral to my plan for our great city. I want all of my constituents to know that I am here to help and support them.

Mental Health:

The manifesto upon which I proudly stood for election in December 2019 committed to treating mental health with the same urgency as physical health. I remain wedded to this commitment, and I urge my colleagues and constituents of all political beliefs to take part in a conversation about establishing a care system fit for the 21st century.

I am pleased that, from September, student nurses will receive a bursary worth at least £5,000, with further funding in disciplines struggling to recruit – such as mental health – and to help with their childcare costs.

Support for Carers:

I recognise the significant contribution that informal carers having been making to their communities in recent times, especially in light of the outbreak of Coronavirus. In Parliament, I have asked a question on this topic. It was confirmed that rather than just more traditional forms of care, providing emotional support to a disabled person will count towards the carer’s allowance threshold of 35 hours of care a week. This is a good starting point. More must be done.
